“The role of the old vineyard will be key in the wines of the future and in the future of the wines”, this sentence from Rafael García, technical director of Vitis Navarra nurseries, summarizes the main conclusions of the working day about Tempranillo that took place recently in the Logroño Riojaforum. The event brought together more than 350 technicians, winemakers and agronomists from Rioja, Ribera de Duero and Navarra mainly, although other wine-growing areas in Spain were also represented.

The speakers emphasized the importance of preserving the biodiversity of the main Spanish autochthonous varieties. Several topics were considered such as cloning characterization methods, the adaptation of clones to different climatic zones in order to compensate for the effects of climate change, or the relationship between the characteristics of different clones and the consumer tastes, among others.
